~ History ~
Mary opened a plaque and
gift shop in the basement of their home in Grubville in 1975. In
1982 they opened Grubville General Store on the same property
offering antiques, gifts and classes. In 1988 the business moved
to Eureka and operated within the Country Cupboard on Central
Avenue. Within a few short months it relocated to the then newly
remodeled Dempsey House owned by Ralph Butler. Eureka was a booming
antique community. While at Dempsey House one day, Dan Wallach
pulled up driving his huge John Deere tractor and said he had heard
“there was a new Wallach in town”. At that moment we knew that our
new location on West Fifth Street, due to open on August 25, 1990,
would be called Wallach House Restaurant and Marketplace for the
family name in Eureka. The tearoom was very successful and popular
with many of the Wallach family recipes on the daily menu. A
treasured Wallach House memory was the joint celebration of Emil
Wallach’s 96th birthday and the 40th wedding
anniversary of Stanley (Bootes) and Clara Ann Wallach. It was a
wonderful afternoon spent with family and the highlight of all the
restaurant events. Our shop, tea room, and banquet facility was a
wonderful meeting place for family, friends local organizations and
customers. To this day our customers wish we would again open the
tea room. Today we offer a fine selection of antiques, decorative
accessories, fine wines and classes.
Many thanks to the wonderful Wallach family, the fine folks in Eureka
and
to all our customers for all the wonderful memories !
